Geoscience Australia

Saltwater People worked with Geoscience Australia and Kuku Yalanji cultural practitioners to develop a training video for their employees. We produced a 20-minute video that articulated the meaning and critical importance of Cultural Heritage from an Indigenous perspective and applied cross-cultural knowledge for non-Indigenous Australians working on traditional lands.

We engaged Juan Walker, a cultural business leader and language teacher who brings expertise in sharing cultural knowledge for non-Indigenous Australians. Juan supported our team to work with Elder and Cultural Advisor, John ‘Karranjal’ Hartley, who provided insight on how to apply this content for diverse Aboriginal groups across Australia. The video also featured Traditional Owners and cultural practitioners Daphne Naden, Richard Burchill, Lorna Shaun, Sheryl J Burchill and Mili Walker.

The purpose of the video was to highlight Indigenous perspectives on connection to Country, Cultural Heritage, Lore and Kinship. The work created was an Aboriginal-led piece of work to accompany existing legislation and policy on cultural heritage.
