Saltwater People partnered with SLQ to create custom artwork and identity across the First 5 Forever program.
First 5 Forever is an early literacy program delivered by public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKCs) to provide early literacy foundations for all Queensland children aged 0-5 years. First 5 Forever connects families to the information, resources and support they need to build the best foundation for their child’s future language and literacy development.
Bernie Singleton created a vibrant and engaging artwork titled Nyurramba Garran – meaning “all come” or “everyone come”– reflecting the program’s four pillars: Talk, Read, Sing, and Play. The work represents the gathering of Indigenous animals playfully learning and receiving knowledge.
“…the idea of learning beyond the classroom and identifying relationships from students’ backgrounds and their communities. This is apparent in nature, and can be seen from observation. Whether on inland open Country, where the young kangaroos are at play – and how we imitate this in our corroboree. This is represented in the background with the tap sticks.
The family of flying foxes and how they read the seasonal changes and migrate to and from food sources in their hundreds and how we read the weather and take in information on a daily basis.
The movement in numbers of the stingray, whether it be in the outer reefs or in our estuaries – as if they are talking to each other in unison, and the cassowaries singing throughout the rainforest to their young as they search for berries and sour plum in the early mornings.”
Our design team created a joyful brand identity and collateral so that all children and their families feel welcomed and engaged when visiting libraries across Queensland.
